A Feature You Won’t Find in Your Tesla

Tesla is known for the extensive and sometimes outlandish technological features available in their vehicles. From ‘dog-mode’ to the ability to watch a movie. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding one particular feature though, in-car gaming.

Their infotainment system in MY2017-2022 makes of the Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y allow drivers to play video games while driving the vehicle.

Initially, this feature was only available for use when the car was parked, however an update in December 2020 saw the ability for this feature to be used when the car is in drive.

There has been controversy surrounding this gaming feature due to how it distracts the driver. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a formal investigation into Tesla over the matter.

Driver distraction is a serious concern on Australian roads. Monash University found Australian drivers are distracted every 96 seconds (almost 45% of the time) by something other than driving their vehicle. As many as 1 in 10 road deaths can be attributed to driver distraction.

In response to the NHTSA investigation Tesla has suspended the gaming feature.
